Our words are containers. When you empty your containers on people what are you pouring into their lives?
We speak approximately 16,000 words per day. (I don’t know who had the time or desire to count them!) Those 16,000 words carry tremendous weight. They affect the listener dramatically and can affect the listener for years to come. How many of us can recall something someone said to us in grade school that cut deeply? Most of us, I would guess. BUT…our words can have the opposite effect: they can be recalled for years to come as words that inspired and motivated someone to become a better person.
Too often we use up a lot of those 16,000 words carelessly. We don’t realize the impact they have on the people around us.
Our words truly are like containers; they can be filled with healing, hope, encouragement, care and help and poured out on people like a healing balm. But our words can also pour out an acid that destroys. We may not realize the acid that is pouring out of these containers but we need to stop and take note. What are my words really doing to someone? We may think it wasn’t a big deal or that they’ll get over it but we are responsible for the damage.
On the other hand, we have the opportunity - even in the next breath we take - to refresh and bring joy into someone’s life. Let me encourage you to turn to someone right now and say something that puts a smile on their face. Now, didn’t that feel good for both of you? Next challenge: do it again. Pick up the phone, send an e-mail, send a message on Facebook or Twitter and put a smile on another person’s face. Be known as the person whose pitchers pour out love and good will to all those around you!
So for today, use the power of your words to bring joy to as many people as you can.
Create a Great Day!
